With Ongoing Leadership Development Long Island Businesses Gain An Edge

By Frances Stone

There has been a very big shift in the way large businesses are run. Most modern and successful enterprises have implemented a system whereby self directed teams pursue specific goals. Members of teams all have very specific roles to play and in most cases teams accept responsibility for achieving their goals. This approach can only work if the organization has strong leaders leading these teams. With leadership development Long Island companies strive towards improving the quality of their teams.

It is a fallacy that one is either born as a leader or not. There are indeed people that seem to find it easy to inspire others and to lead but anyone can acquire the characteristics of true leaders. That is why many companies have formal programs in place to nurture and to develop potential leaders. They would not spend so much time and money on these programs if they did not believe that leaders can be developed.

Reputable programs emphasize the fact that nobody is the leader of a team at all times. The role of leader changes according to the situation or the circumstances. In a certain situation one person may be the best choice for leading the team but not in different circumstances. The role of leader therefore changes. There are also those that have no desire to lead and forcing them in such a role can be a mistake.

Hugely successful companies do not just employ strong and inspirational leaders at the top of the structure. They develop leaders throughout the organization, even at the lower levels of the hierarchy. In this way they strengthen their teams and maintain a high level of motivation among all their staff. It is not only potential leaders that need to be developed. Even experienced leaders can become stagnant and will benefit from ongoing development programs.

Any good program for developing leaders places a high emphasis on the issue of failure and mistakes. Nobody is perfect and even the best leaders make mistakes. The secret is to learn from those mistakes and to refuse to allow a failure to have an impact on future decisions and actions. The same goes for flaws. Truly great leaders admit their shortcomings but they work hard at overcoming them.

There is no shortage of courses, workshops, seminars and programs designed to develop leaders. It is always a good idea to ask service providers for references. Courses should have very clear objectives and service providers must be prepared to explain how those objectives will be achieved and what their instructional methodology will be. Programs under consideration should be properly accredited.

Formal courses and programs are certainly very useful for exposing developing leaders to new ideas and knowledge. It is at the workplace, however, that these ideas have to be tried and implemented. To this end some companies use independent coaches to guide promising new leaders. These coaches make no decisions. They simply act to motivate their clients, to make them think before acting and to be their sounding boards.

Without strong leaders at all levels of the organization, no company can hope to thrive in this competitive modern business environment. Programs to develop leaders should therefore be seen as an investment in the future. A business with strong leaders is better focused.
