The Benefits Of Exposed Timbers And Beams

By Elaine Guthrie

When it comes to decorating the home, people often think of furniture and frames mounted on walls. They often tend to neglect some of the most attractive elements or additions that could provide the wow factor in any space. One of the most impressive elements could be as easy as installing exposed timbers and beams.

For starters, beams and timbers that are exposed are in plain sight, so they always draw attention. When installed on the ceiling, they draw the eye upwards. That said, they become an architectural feature automatically, even if they are simply decorative. They can hover over any area of any room and they bring warmth and interest, which is why they are so highly in demand these days.

One needn't worry about shapes, sizes, lengths, or even wood species. No matter what, they can lend a unique appearance to any space. They can also come in the form of reclaimed wood. This is an environmentally friendly option. However, they could be completely new. In the case of reclaimed wood beams, which are extremely in demand, they lend an older and weathered appearance that can work in almost any decor scheme.

Regardless of that fact, timbers exposed add style to a space that's otherwise empty. Making the sedition will allow the ceiling to shine. From there, add the right color to brighten up the room. Choosing darker ceiling colors could be recommended in the case of extremely high ceilings, as they would appear to lower the high ceilings, but they should not be used on standard or lower ceilings as they would make the room dimmer.

Vivid colors can sometimes be overpowering depending on the rest of the decor. However, light pastels can really raise the ceiling, especially when contrasted by deeper shades of the same color on the walls. Making the ceiling beamed makes it an architectural feature that will provide a unique look and feel to the space.

This addition may not be for everyone, mostly because they are weary of making the investment. Rest assured, however, that it would be a positive investment with many benefits. Consider just how much is going on in any room from approximately eye level and below. These are the regular additions when it comes to decorating, but most ceilings, with the exception of crown moldings, are usually left bare.

For example, consider an all white modern design scheme that includes white walls and white furniture. Imagine exotic rich flooring and a splash of colorful artwork on the walls. Now, while this is very sophisticated and austere, imagine the contrasting rich browns in the overhead beams. What an exciting decor!

Don't always think inside the box when it comes to decorating. In addition to that, considering this is an architectural feature that is there to stay, people should think of it as an investment. For the most part, it will automatically increase property value. Therefore, one can benefit from a more attractive space, but also one that will bring forth a good resale value whenever that time comes.
