Discovering Certified Nurse Anesthetist Schools

By Ines Flores

You may have looked into the various career opportunities for an RN. Surely you have seen the benefits of gaining further education by attending one of the Certified Nurse Anesthetist schools. These well paid professionals play an important role during surgery. The individual interested in becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, or CRNA, will first need to go to school to study nursing and become an RN.

The certified nursing anesthetists are responsible to administering anesthesia during surgeries and various procedures. This position is for the individual who has had comprehensive training. If you are working as an RN you can continue to work while studying for your Master degree. You will be required to have a BS degree and at least one year experience working as an RN.

For an individual who is not already in the field of nursing there are some options to help them achieve the goal. The first step is to go to school to receive a practical nursing license. In this position you assist doctors and RNs and can start working toward a Bachelor of nursing. You may choose to go right into a nursing program to earn a BSN degree. An RN make significantly more than an LPN so paying for a Master program will be easier.

After you have earned your BSN and have at least worked for one year as an RN, you are ready to start working on your Master degree in nursing, or MSN. At the Master level you are able to become an APN, advance practice nursing. This field not only includes certified anesthetists but clinical nursing specialists, certified midwives, and nurse practitioners. These are highly skilled positions that require serious consideration.

The areas of training for this professional require education in pharmacology related to the practice of anesthesia. They include studies in anatomy, physiology, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, and pathophysiology. The clinical training teaches students the different methods and procedures necessary to administer anesthesia during surgery and in obstetrics.

The Master program usually takes 24 to 36 months to finish. Once the studies are completed you receive a MSN and are able to sit for the certification exam. This is a national exam that once passed, qualifies you to work as a CRNA. When looking for a program make certain you enroll in the one that comes well recommended and is accredited.

Becoming a certified RN anesthetist takes dedication and hard work. Obtaining the advanced degree can be very demanding. Since it is beneficial to continue working in your current position it can sometimes be difficult balancing education time with employment hours. It is important that you clearly evaluate the options available to you to help you reach your goal.

These professionals often earn as much or more than doctors. The significant difference in pay is due to the sensitive nature of the care being provided. These skilled professionals are responsible for administering the proper anesthesia without harming the patient. The care the CRNA provides to surgical patients starts before they enter the operating room and does not end until after they are seen in recovery.
