Why Mobile Crane Inspections Are Essential

By Marlene Blevins

When you hire a mobile crane for your construction, you are left with the responsibility of planning, supervising, and lifting operations plans. You and other people who hire cranes may not necessarily have the skills and details of how to use the machines and supervise work. Most people opt to hire contractors for this type of work. Hiring the right skilled people including mobile crane inspections technicians is essential to ensure safety, which comes first before all other things.

It is also important to hire qualified, certified and skilled technicians who carry out inspections on the equipment at a regular basis as required by the law. They use ultrasonic technology, advanced devices such as bore scopes, pendants for checking faults, and repair them early enough. These aspects prevent any unforeseen damages, reduce risks, and increase efficiency of the cranes.

Load hooks may be examined for things like cracks and deformations. Although cranes are carefully designed and manufactured to ensure safety, if they are not constantly monitored, they can develop defects that could lead to problems. Due to constantly use, the parts of these machines may develop weaknesses. If they are not checked, they can cause very serious accidents.

Employees are happy when they work under safe environments. If your company has been recording increasing number of accidents related to cranes, you are mostly likely to lose your employees. It is a requirement by OSHA that these lifting machines should be inspected regularly or periodically.

When you have purchased your own lifting machine, you need to ensure you maintain it properly. It is your responsibility to have the machine inspected regularly. While there are the daily checking and examinations done by the technicians and the operators of cranes, there are monthly inspections that should be performed by only qualified professionals.

It can also avert risks posed by weak cranes. Things like accidents can occur within the workplace due to use of cranes in weakened conditions. Such accidents could cost a company a lot of money in lawsuits through worker compensation claims or personal injury claims. Inspectors can prevent the costly mistakes by avoiding costly repairs down the road.

The inspectors you get should be certified with the Crane Certification Association of America. With a detailed inspection, it assists you in making a valid decision and allows you consider the option of replacing a new one or opting for the old machine. A qualified inspector can assist you in coming up with a benchmark on the options you have. At times, you might even find that it is better to seek for a new machine than the old ones.

Cranes are equipments that handle heavy loads and sometimes work under harsh terrains and environments. For the safety of the people operating these machines and those working around, they need to be inspected properly time in time. OSHA requires that all cranes are inspected for possible defects whether major or minor and repairs done as soon as possible.
